Kanienʼkéha (Mohawk) Language Translation Services
Kanienʼkéha is an Iroquoian language spoken by around 3,500 people, mainly in Canada (southern Ontario and Quebec), and to a lesser extent in the United States (western and northern New York).
The name “Mohawk” emerged during the era of early settlers and has become widely recognized as the name associated with this nation and their language. Mohawk people refer to themselves as Kanienʼkehá꞉ka. Honoring the identity and language of the Indigenous people of Turtle Island is important to us, and we use the traditional names whenever possible.

Kanienʼkéha (Mohawk) Translation Considerations
The Kanienʼkéha language is currently classified as “definitely endangered”, although the number of speakers has increased in the last decade thanks to vigorous revitalization efforts. We’re proud to be a small part of this process through our Kanienʼkéha (Mohawk) translation services to help revive and nurture endangered Indigenous languages. Our team has the necessary experience and expertise to navigate these unique challenges. Here are some key considerations:
- Multiple dialects: the language has two major dialects: Western (Ohswé:ken and Kenhté:ke) and Eastern (Kahnawà:ke and Kanehsatà:ke), but each community has their own variations in pronunciation and vocabulary. Despite these differences, speakers of different dialects can understand each other, as the dialects are mutually comprehensible.
- Limited Speakers: There are around 2,350 speakers of this language. Many within native territory now teach the language from kindergarten through to grade 8 and language classes are offered to adults.
- Language Experts First: Indigenous translators are, for the most part, not full-time translators but first and foremost they are masters of the language, and often educators, Elders, or community leaders.
