Celebrating Dene Language and Culture: Supporting the Dene Language Gathering
On April 17, 2026 a room filled with Elders, educators, language professionals, community leaders, and advocates gathered at the Coronet Hotel in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, under a shared theme “Our Language. Our Culture. Our Future.” The Dene Language Gathering created a dedicated space where knowledge moved freely between generations, spoken languages were celebrated, and community-led cultural revitalization took center stage.
Wintranslation was proud to support this gathering as an event sponsor and to stand behind the vital work being led by Dene language advocates. As a language service provider, we recognize that local communities and language professionals are best positioned to guide conversations around their languages, cultures, and priorities. Our role is to support these community efforts by providing professional language services and building respectful, long-term relationships with the translators and interpreters we work alongside.
Why Language Gatherings Matter
Languages thrive when people have active opportunities to speak them, teach them, and pass them down between generations. Events like the Dene Language Gathering bring Elders, educators, youth, and language advocates together to exchange knowledge and strengthen initiatives in their communities. That exchange, in person, across generations, is where language revitalization actually lives.
Recognizing the Role of Elders and Language Keepers
A central focus of the event was recognizing Dene Elders and language keepers as they pass language, teachings, and cultural knowledge between generations. Their guidance remains fundamental to communities seeking to ensure their native languages continue to be spoken, taught, and celebrated.
Dene interpreter and educator Julius Park highlighted this generational connection:
Dene Elders are the keepers of our language, teachings, and traditional knowledge, guiding younger generations to live and experience the true identity of the Dene people. As protectors of our values and culture, we honour our Elders as respected teachers who help preserve our way of life for future generations.
As part of our sponsorship, we contributed a custom event banner displaying the message “Our Elders: Keepers of Dene Identity.” The message reflected the gathering’s emphasis on the role of Elders in transmitting language, knowledge and cultural identity across generations.
Supporting Community-Led Language Work
As a language service provider, our role is to support the work that Indigenous communities and language professionals are leading on their own terms. For us, sponsoring community initiatives means showing up to support fluent speakers, building respectful relationships with translators and interpreters, and recognizing that those closest to the language set the priorities.
