Atikamekw Translation Services

Atikamekw (Nehirâmowin) is a dialect of the Algonquian Cree language family, often referred to as the “r” dialect. The name “Atikamekw” translates to “lake whitefish,” symbolizing a culturally significant species for the Atikamekw people. Their ancestral territory, Nitaskinan, meaning “Our Land,” spans a vast area approximately 300 kilometers north of Montreal. Around 98% of the Atikamekw population can speak the language, with a significant number of children learning it as their first language at home.

Atikamekw Language Translation Considerations

Despite this relatively positive outlook, Atikamekw still faces challenges and requires a specialized approach distinct from more commonly spoken language translation projects. Our team has the necessary experience and expertise to navigate these unique challenges. Here are some key considerations:

  • Limited Speakers: While Atikamekw language is strong within the communities, the size of the Atikamekw population and the increasing migration of younger people to urban areas places pressure on language continuity. According to the 2021 Census, there are 6,800 speakers in Canada.
  • French into Atikamekw: Historically, the second language spoken in the Atikamekw communities is French, with only some people using English for work-related communication. Atikamekw translators can only translate from French, so they will need the source text in French
  • Language Experts First: Atikamekw translators are, for the most part, not full-time translators but first and foremost they are masters of the language, Elders, teachers, and community leaders.
