Cayuga, also known as Gayogo̱hó:nǫ’, is one of the languages within the Northern Iroquoian family which is spoken in the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation.
Although Cayuga is critically endangered, recent census and community data indicate a small but active group of speakers and learners, with revitalization initiatives including immersion programming, community classes, and digital learning tools.
Sometimes referred to as the “People of the Great Swamp” language, Cayuga reflects the relationship between land, identity, and community. While it shares similarities with Oneida, Onondaga, Mohawk, and Seneca, each language remains distinct in structure and expression.

Cayuga Language Translation Considerations
Cayuga is an endangered language with a limited number of fluent speakers, many of whom are Elders and language teachers.
According to the 2021 census, there were about 230 people in Canada who reported that they could speak Cayuga well enough to conduct a conversation, and 115 who reported Cayuga as their mother tongue.
This reality makes it essential that translation work proceed with respect for community priorities, knowledge holders, and the cultural context of each text.

- Limited speakers: The speaker base for Cayuga remains small, and fluent speakers often hold multiple roles as Elders, educators, or cultural leaders. As a result, translation timelines should allow for careful review and community consultation.
- Oral Tradition & Written Forms: Traditionally, Cayuga is an oral language. Recent revitalization efforts have established modern orthographies using Roman letters, developed in collaboration with community linguists and educators. Cayuga uses a Roman orthography with diacritics for nasals (ę, ǫ) and glottal stops (’).
- Language structure: The language has a polysynthetic structure, meaning that a single Cayuga word can express what would be a phrase or full sentence in English. Because of this, direct word-for-word translation is rarely possible and professional work must pay close attention to intent, audience, and register.
- Multiple Dialects and Variations: Regional differences exist in pronunciation and vocabulary among Cayuga speakers from different communities. Consulting native experts ensures translations align with the intended audience.
