Chipewyan (also known as Dënesųłinë́, or simply Dëne), is the language spoken by the Chipewyan people of northwestern Canada. It is categorized as part of the Northern Athabaskan language family and has nearly 12,000 native speakers in Canada, mostly in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories.

The word “Dene” means “people”. It is a collective term for people previously known as Athapaskans, and is often used as an equivalent to the Athapaskan language group. Dene may refer to the collective group (including Denesuline, Tlicho, Slavey, and others) as well as the specific Denesuline language

Indigenous languages hold profound cultural significance and are actively preserved despite challenges. UNESCO has listed Chipewyan (Dene Sųłiné) as vulnerable, reflecting not only the rarity of fluent speakers but also the complexity of its structure, which includes unique syllables that can be challenging to master. Most fluent speakers are respected Elders, who play a vital role in language preservation and knowledge-sharing within their communities.

• Multiple Dialects: Due to the wide geographic distribution of Denesuline communities across multiple provinces, there are notable variations in how the language is spoken. In Saskatchewan alone, two primary dialects are recognized:
  • the “t” dialect spoken in various northern communities such as La Loche, Clearwater River Dene Nation, Descharme Lake, Black Point, Turnor Lake, Birch Narrows First Nations, Bear Creek, Garson Lake, St’George’s Hill, Michel Village, Buffalo River Dene Nation, English River Dene Nation, Stony Rapids, Black Lake and Wollaston Lake
  • the less common “k” dialect, primarily spoken in Fond-du-Lac, located in the Athabasca Region
• Language Experts First: Indigenous translators are not typically full-time language professionals. Instead, they are first and foremost masters of the language—often Elders, educators, or community leaders—who bring deep cultural knowledge and expertise to their work. Because many of these translators balance other responsibilities, projects in Denesuline may take longer to complete compared to more commonly spoken languages.
• Oral Tradition & Writing Systems: Denesuline is traditionally an oral language. Over time, various writing systems have been developed to represent it, including multiple versions of syllabics and numerous Roman orthographies. Different regions have adopted different standards, with some favoring Roman letters and others using syllabics.
