East Cree, also known as James Bay (Eastern) Cree, is a group of Cree dialects spoken in Quebec, Canada. These dialects are used by communities along the eastern coasts of Hudson Bay and James Bay, as well as in inland areas around James Bay. East Cree is part of the larger Algonquian language family and is distinguished by its regional variations and deep connection to the land and waterways that define the region.

East Cree Language Translation Considerations
According to Census 2021, there are 5,775 language speakers, and a total of 19,000 Cree are living in the area. While East Cree is not considered endangered, it still requires a specialized approach distinct from more commonly spoken languages. Our team has the necessary experience and expertise to navigate these unique challenges. Here are some key considerations:
- Multiple dialects: East Cree is generally divided into two main dialects: Inu Ayimun (Southern East Cree) and Iyiyiw-Ayimiwin (Northern East Cree). While speakers of both can usually understand each other, differences become more noticeable the farther apart the communities are. The Northern dialect is spoken in Wemindji, Chisasibi, and Whapmagoostui, whereas the Southern dialect is common in Waskaganish, Nemaska, Waswanipi, Oujé-Bougoumou, and Mistissini. Eastmain is considered a transitional community, following the Southern dialect’s writing system but showing some Northern influences. Additionally, the Southern dialect is further divided into coastal and inland varieties, reflecting subtle regional differences.
- Limited Speakers: there are 4,880 speakers of Iyiyiw-Ayimiwin (Northern East Cree) and 895 – for Inu Ayimun (Southern East Cree) according to Census 2021.
- Writing system: East Cree is written with syllabics, however it can also be written with the Roman alphabet. .
- Language Experts First: Cree translators are, for the most part, not full-time translators but first and foremost they are masters of the language, Elders, teachers, and community leaders.
