Halkomelem is spoken in southwestern British Columbia, Canada and into northern Washington, United States. Halkomelem has three distinct dialect groups:
- An Island dialect spoken by the Snuynemuxw, Nanoonse, Chemainus, Cowichan, Halalt, Lake Cowichan, Lyackson, and Penelakut.
- A Downriver dialect, spoken by the Musqueam, Twawwassen, Kawntlen, Tsleil-Waututh, Qayqayt, Kwikwetlem, and Katzie First Nations.
- An Upriver dialect, called Upper Sto:lo, spoken between Matsqui First Nation and Yale.
Halkomelem is currently considered an endangered language with only 260 native speakers in 35 of 42 communities in Canada.
