Michif is the language spoken by the Métis people in Canada and the United States, who are descendants of First Nations and European fur trade workers. It emerged in the early 19th century as French fur traders interacted with Cree- and Ojibwe-speaking communities in the Red River Valley of Manitoba.

While Michif has traditionally been spoken in Métis communities in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, its speakers today are not confined to any specific region.

According to UNESCO’s Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger, Michif is classified as critically endangered. Statistics Canada reported that 1,845 people identified as Michif speakers in 2021.

Translating into Michif requires a thoughtful approach that is distinct from more commonly spoken languages. Our team has the necessary experience and expertise to navigate these unique challenges. Here are some key considerations:

• Three Michif Languages: Michif encompasses three distinct languages rooted in Métis culture: Michif French, Heritage Michif, and Northern Michif. Each of these languages is unique, and speakers of one do not necessarily understand the others.
  Michif French – The language is spoken in the Métis communities from western Ontario to central Alberta, and St. Louis in Saskatchewan. It can be classified as a French dialect linguistically. Much of its vocabulary and grammar come from the dialects of the early French voyageurs. But at the same time, it is heavily influenced by Algonquian languages.
  Heritage Michif – It is mainly spoken from western Manitoba to central Alberta, and in the areas of Yorkton, Cypress Hills, Qu’Appelle Valley, and Round Prairie/Saskatoon in Saskatchewan. The language is a mixture of Cree verbs and French nouns.
  Northern Michif – It is spoken in parts of Northern Alberta, and Green Lake, Meadow Lake, Beauval, Île-à-la-Crosse, and Buffalo Narrows in Saskatchewan. While some consider it a dialect of Cree, it has a distinct French influence, making this language unique enough that some speakers struggle to be understood by speakers of other Cree dialects.
• No Spelling Standard: Michif, as a traditionally oral language with regional variations, does not have a uniform spelling system. This lack of standardization can result in differences in written texts, potentially affecting the consistency of translation projects. It’s important to know from the start where the target audience is located, as regional variations in spelling can impact the final translation’s accuracy and relevance to that audience.
• Gender Distinctions: Under the influence of French and Plains Cree, Michif determiners and possessives are marked for masculine–feminine gender like in French, and demonstratives and verbs are marked for inanimate–animate gender like in Plains Cree.
• Language Experts First: Indigenous translators are not typically full-time language professionals. Instead, they are first and foremost masters of the language—often Elders, educators, or community leaders—who bring deep cultural knowledge and expertise to their work. Because many of these translators balance other responsibilities, translation projects may take longer to complete compared to more commonly spoken languages.
