Also known as the “l” dialect, Moose Cree (ililîmowin) is another dialect of Cree spoken only from James Bay to Lake Superior in Ontario, particularly in Moose Factory, where the dialect derives its name.
Moose Cree, along with Plains Cree, Woods Cree, and Swampy Cree, is one of the four primary Cree variants found in Ontario, extending west to the Rocky Mountains.

Moose Cree Language Translation Considerations
According to UNESCO’s Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger, Moose Cree is classified as Vulnerable. Data from Statistics Canada’s Aboriginal Population Profile, 2016 Census indicates that only 10 members of the Moose Cree First Nation reported speaking the dialect at home.
Similar to the case of Swampy Cree, efforts such as creating mobile apps and online dictionaries are being made to revitalize Moose Cree, despite the small number of native speakers.

- Writing Systems: Traditionally, Moose Cree is written in the Eastern Syllabics. Locally, it is also recorded in the Latin alphabet as hymn scripts and other materials.
- Polysynthetic Language: Cree is a complex language due to its polysynthetic nature, which means that a single word can convey multiple concepts. Sometimes, an entire sentence in English could be translated as just one word. One Cree word can be translated into a complete sentence in English.
- Verb-based Structure: Cree and English are distinct languages in terms of their usage of verbs and nouns. Instead of relying on nouns to express ideas, Cree focuses on verbs. A Cree speaker says, “It’s mosquitoing everywhere,” meaning “There are plenty of mosquitoes.” The verb forms in Cree are also more complex than those in English. Cree verbs change by combining suffixes and prefixes to form singular and plural forms for every person.
