Nakoda (or Nakota or Nakona), also known as Stoney, is spoken by the Iyethka (The Pure People) in Alberta and Saskatchewan. It is the northern dialect of the Dakota language in the Siouan language family.
Among the Dakotan dialects, Nakoda is considered the most different linguistically. It is not mutually intelligible with Lakota or Dakota, and even though Assiniboine is its closest linguistic relative, speakers of Nakoda and Assiniboine cannot understand each other.
Nakoda means “friend” or “ally”, and early European explorers named the people “Stoney,” referring to their unique way of cooking using stones.
