Naskapi Translation Services
Naskapi, referred to as ᐃᔪᐤ ᐃᔨᒧᐅᓐ (Iyuw Iyimuun) by its speakers, is an Algonquian language spoken by the Naskapi people in Quebec and Labrador, Canada. This language is traditionally written using Eastern Cree syllabics.
Naskapi is considered a Cree “y-dialect,” sharing several linguistic features with the Northern dialect of East Cree, and has many common lexical items with the Innu language.
Despite the closer linguistic and cultural ties between Naskapi and Innu, compared to other Cree language communities, Naskapi remains a unique and distinct language within the Quebec-Labrador peninsula.

Naskapi Translation Services Considerations
Many Indigenous languages are rare and vulnerable, with a significant number being classified as endangered or critically endangered. Naskapi is classified as Vulnerable by the UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger and translating into this language requires a specialized approach distinct from more commonly spoken languages. Our team has the necessary experience and expertise to navigate these unique challenges. Here are some key considerations:
- Limited Speakers: Based on the census 2021, there are 1,715 Innu and Naskapi speakers in Atlantica Canada, and 1,700 in Newfoundland and Labrador, a 20% decrease since the census 2016.
- English into Naskapi: Naskapi is spoken by the entire population and English is the second language.
- Writing system: There are two writing systems used for the Naskapi language. One is Latin, similar to Innu Language (Montagnais), and the other is Cree syllabics, similar to James Bay Cree, as well as other dialects of Cree across Canada.
- Linguistic structure: Naskapi, like many Indigenous languages, has a complex grammatical structure that can be difficult to translate into and from languages like English or French.
