News Release: wintranslation Sharing Expertise About Indigenous Language Translations at U of Ottawa Conference

NOVEMBER 11th, 2016

OTTAWA- wintranslation project manager Azaëlle Elliott-Bouchard will share her expertise on the growing demand for, and inherent challenges of Indigenous language translation at the International Conference in Translation Studies. Organized by the University of Ottawa’s School of Translation and Interpretation, the conference is being held on November 11-12.

With wintranslation specializing in Indigenous languages, Elliott-Bouchard has managed hundreds of Indigenous language projects over the years and much of her talk will focus on highlighting the unique set of challenges these projects present and how to overcome them.

“Many Aboriginal communities are remote, so identifying and recruiting translators fluent in Indigenous languages and their various dialects can be challenging. Additionally, some languages have a more oral tradition, so it is often difficult to locate proficient writers, especially those with computer access” says Elliott-Bouchard. “To overcome these obstacles, wintranslation’s Aboriginal Translations Unit uses innovative methods to create connections with Indigenous communities and recruit linguists.”

Natural resource companies, health organizations and various government departments often reach out to wintranslation for support in reaching Indigenous communities. Commonly requested languages include Ojibway, Cree, Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun, but over the years, the company has managed projects into over 25 Indigenous languages.

“We’ve seen the positive impact it can have on Aboriginal communities when important resources are made available in their native languages. This conference is a great opportunity to share our experiences, and if that helps facilitate more translations into Aboriginal languages, that is definitely positive,” says Elliott-Bouchard.
