Using Technology to Support Ojibwe Language Revitalization
July 30, 2026 – Motorola and the Lenovo Foundation have launched the Indigenous Collections app, a free Android platform developed with the Rainy Lake Ojibwe community to support Ojibwe language and cultural revitalization. The app brings together vocabulary, traditional stories, geographic landmarks and family history, while incorporating cultural protocols that restrict the sharing of sensitive knowledge. The initiative forms part of Motorola’s broader Indigenous Languages Initiative, which has introduced digital support for several Indigenous and minority languages through localized interfaces, keyboards, and other resources. In developing the Ojibwe app, Motorola worked directly with language instructor Jason Jones, Ojibwe scholar Anton Treuer, and community Elders to record, transcribe, and translate stories and personal narratives.
For the translation industry, the initiative illustrates how language technology can support revitalization when translation and localization are carried out collaboratively with the communities whose languages are being represented, highlighting the importance of respecting cultural protocols and emphasizing community ownership.

Expanding Ojibwe Vocabulary via an Extreme Sports Magazine
August 10, 2026 – A new Ojibwe-language magazine called Asab is helping create new words to describe contemporary activities such as skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing. Created by Simon Fraser University associate professor Bimose Nick Reo and Anishinaabe contributors, the publication is believed to be the first magazine in North America produced entirely in a single Indigenous language.
The project brought together first-language Ojibwe speakers to develop roughly 300 new words for concepts including skateboarding tricks, ramps, and riding styles. The inaugural issue features contributions from 19 Anishinaabe writers and creators across Canada and the United States, including photo essays, comics, poetry and digital-style conversations. For the translation industry, Asab illustrates the importance of terminology development and the challenges translators face when working with languages that have historically been underrepresented in contemporary domains. It also highlights how translation, communities, and language revitalization efforts can work together to ensure Indigenous languages grow alongside broader cultural phenomena in a rapidly-changing world.

Funding AI Research and the Future of Canadian Translation
July 14, 2026 – Anthropic has committed $10 million CAD to eight Canadian research institutions, funding projects that focus on Indigenous languages, AI safety, mental health, and quantum computing. Of particular relevance, Université Laval will examine how large language models perform across different cultural contexts, including Quebec French and a number of Indigenous languages.
Anthropic’s research also shows that Canada is an unusually active market for AI-assisted language work, with translation requests concentrated in provinces with larger government workforces. This investment could accelerate the development of AI translation tools for Canadian languages, but research involving Indigenous languages is especially significant because the majority of these languages have limited digital data and require approaches that account for community-specific cultural and linguistic contexts.

AI-Powered Sign Language Translation and the Future of Accessible Communication
August 12, 2026 – Google DeepMind has introduced a new sign-language-to-text model called SL2T, which is being integrated into Gboard and Live Transcribe to allow deaf and hard-of-hearing users to communicate with smartphones through signing. The model was trained on more than 100,000 hours of multilingual sign-language data, although it initially supports only American Sign Language (ASL) to English transcription.
Unlike earlier systems that translated signs into intermediate “glosses,” SL2T translates directly from geometric representations of a signer’s movements into text, enabling it to observe features such as facial expressions, spatial relationships and other non-manual elements of sign languages. The technology could significantly expand accessibility to digital communication, while its multilingual training may eventually allow it to support additional sign languages and spoken-language outputs.
